Thornhill Galleries holds an impressive selection of English and Irish marble fireplaces, dating from 18th century reclaimed fireplaces to fine modern reproductions of original chimneypieces. Amongst our marble collection are fireplace designs from the Georgian, Regency, Victorian and Art Deco periods, in traditional white marbles such as Statuary and Carrara, and often inlaid with beautiful coloured marbles such as Siena, Jasper, Connemara, Brocatelle and Bardiglio. In addition antique Irish fireplaces are often carved in striking Kilkenny black marble.
English and Irish antique marble fireplaces traditionally exhibit an elegant tall, shallow design, often with fine carving which became more popular in the designs of the later Georgian architects such as Robert Adam, and replaced the deeper carving of the early to mid 18th century designs. In the later Regency period, the fashion of having large mirrors above the fireplaces, resulted in antique mantels becoming lower, and the recent archaeological discoveries of the time is reflected in the appearance of Greek and Egyptian symbolism in the fireplaces. Feel free to call us today to learn more about our collection of antique marble fireplaces from the UK and mainland Europe.
